Product Description

Philippos Philadelphos 89-83 BC. Tetradrachm year 20 = 30-29 BC Antiochia. Diademed head right / Jupiter seated left on throne, holding crowning Victory; monograms to inner left and below throne. RPC 4137; extremely fine
After deposing the last of the Seleukid kings, Pompey the Great made Syria and Cilicia into Roman provinces in 64 BC. The province was governed by Roman procurators, among them well known men as Marcus Licinius Crassus and Publius Quinctilius Varus. Even under Roman rule coins were issued with portrait and name of Philippos Philadelphus, the last legitimate king of Syria. The monograms, however, show them to be Roman coins.
