Money of the last Shoguns
  • Extraordinary shaped coin
  • Document of the isolation of Japan
  • Shogun means "Great General"
These shu-coins were minted in Japan from 1853 until 1865. This was before Japan opened itself to the west and adapted its coinage to western standards. These rectangular coins are the last witnesses of the great shogun-times which ended in 1867, when Tokugawa Yoshinobu resigned as shogun and abdicated his authority to Emperor Meiji
