Argos was the faithful dog of Ulysses and waited for his master's return for 20 years in the palace of Ithaca. When Ulysses returned home, Argos recognized him at once. But he was old and very tired, lying neglected on a pile of cow manure. He had just enough strength to drop his ears and wag his tail but couldn't get up to greet his master. Then the dog died.
