When his predecessor and nephew Caligula was killed, Claudius fled to the imperial palace to save his own life. There he is said to have hidden behind a curtain, where he was located by one praetorian who proclaimed him emperor. Then he was brought to the fort of the praetorians for his own safety.
Claudius was the first emperor since Augustus who expanded the Roman Empire with the conquest of Britannia.
