According to legend Romulus founded the city of Rome. The population of the young city consisted mainly of men and lacked women. Romulus solved this problem cunningly. He invited the neighbouring tribe of the Sabines to a great feast. When the feast was in full swing, armed Roman warriors plunged into the crowd, seizing all women they could get hold of. The Sabines wanted revenge and besieged Rome, lead by their king Titus Tatius. The Sabines and Romans fought an epic battle that concluded when the abducted Sabine women intervened to convince the two sides to reconcile and end the war.
