Der Legende nach, konnte der Untergang Venedigs im Jahre 1340 nur durch das Eingreifen der drei Schutzpatrone Markus, Georg und Nikolaus abgewendet werden. Den Heiligen gelang es, die tosenden Fluten von einem Fischerboot aus zu besänftigen. Der Fischer erhielt von Ihnen einen Ring - den "Ring des Fischers" - den er dem Dogen, zu dieser Zeit war es Bartolomeo Gradenigo, überreichen sollte.
