Crown prince Rudolph was the only son of emperor Franz Joseph I. and empress Elisabeth. under the pressure of his father he married Stephanie, the daughter of the Belgian king Leopold II.
Rudolph was considered to be a liberal. Contrary to his father who was closely allied to Germany Rudolph aimed for an alliance with France and England.
The Prince suffered from extreme modd swings and committed suicide in 1889. Next to him the body of one of his numerous concubines -the17-year-old baroness Mary Vetsera- was found. What exactly happened this night couldn't be enlightened until today.
