The altar of Lyon (Ara Romae et Augusti) was consecrated in 12 BC. in honor of Rome and Augustus. It was the religious center of the three provinces of Gaul (Tres Galliae). During the annual council of the provinces games and sacrifices were celebrated, by which the loyalty of the Gallic tribes towards the emperor should be expressed.
