Anaxilas, Tyrant 494-461 BC. Tetradrachm 27 mm 494-461 BC. Biga of mules driven right by charioteer, in exergue, laurel leaf / Hare springing right. HN Italy 2472; very fine to extremely fine
well centered specimen with rich in detail depiction on obv.
The obverse of this historically and numismatically interesting tetradrachm celebrates Anaxilas' victory at the Olympic Games in 480 BC. in the competition of the two-hand horse races with mules (apene). As usual in this sport, Anaxilas did not compete personally, but was the sponsor of the team that ultimately won.
This picture was depicted on the occasion of the victory not only in Rhegion, but also on the coins of Messana, who was also ruled by Anaxilas.
