Agathokles (ca. 360 v. Chr. bis 289 v. Chr.) übernahm 317 v. Chr. durch einen Staatsstreich die Macht in Syrakus. Er führte einen langen, verlustreichen Krieg gegen die Karthager und brachte schließlich große Teile Siziliens und einen Teil Kalabriens in seine Gewalt.
Nach dem Vorbild des makedonischen Königreichs in Griechenland, das das System der Stadtstaaten abgelöst hatte, nahm Agathokles den Titel "König von Sizilien" an. Sizilien war jedoch alles andere als ein geeintes Reich, und so zerfiel das Königreich des Agathokles nach dessen Tod wieder.
