Nemausus (das heutige Nîmes in Südfrankreich) war ursprünglich eine keltische Siedlung. Unter Augustus wurden hier 27 v.Chr. Veteranen angesiedelt, mit deren Hilfe er Ägypten im Kampf gegen Marcus Antonius und Kleopatra erobern konnte. Noch heute ist das angekettete Krokodil das Stadtwappen der Stadt.
