- Original member of the LMU
- Vittorio Emanuele II was the first king of a united Italy
- The Italians gave him the epithet "Father of the Homeland"
Vittorio Emanuelle II. of Savoy was King of Sardinia-Piemont. He became a universal symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, the movement pushing towards the unification of Italy. Due to smart foreign affairs he was able to banish the Habsburgs from Northern Italy and to unite Italy. When he captured the Papal States nearly without a struggle in 1870, he made Rome his new capital and Palazzo del Quirinale his royal residence. Victor Emanuel II¿s success at these goals got him excommunicated from the Catholic Church. But Victor Emanuel II was very popular with the Italians, who gave him the epithet "Father of the Homeland". He was also called "Gentleman-King" for his behaviour and manners.
