The last Abbasid caliph, al-Musta`sim, was killed during the horrific Mongol sack of Baghdad in 1258 A.D. Legend has it that the Caliph was rolled in a carpet, then trampled to death by elephants so that the Mongol tradition of not spilling royal blood could be upheld.
