Seit Ende des 11. Jahrhunderts gelang Florenz der Aufstieg zur freien Reichsstadt. Die Stadt wurde Republik mit wechselnder, meist aber mehr aristokratischer als demokratischer Verfassung. Dank glänzender Handelsverbindungen, hoch entwickeltem Gewerbe und ausgebildetem Geld- und Bankwesen entwickelte sich die Republik zu einer der wichtigsten Handelsmächte, deren Goldmünzen als Standard in ganz Europa akzeptiert wurden.
