The gens Sergia was an ancient Roman patrician family, of which Marcus Sergius Silus (3rd century BC) is one of the most famous. The depiction on the reverse alludes to his courage and bravery during the Second Punic War against Hannibal (218-201 BC). According to sources, he escaped Carthaginian captivity several times and lost an arm in the process. He had a prosthetic made that could hold a shield.
The mint master was the father of the conspirator Lusius Sergius Catiline, known from Cicero's speeches.
