During the reign of Gallienus a group of coins was issued that does not show mythological or military subjects on the reverse but animals. These coins are sometimes called the "Zoo of Gallienus". The reason for depicting animals on the coins is not known, maybe it refers to religious festivals or games to entertain the Roman people.
