Product Description
L. Marcius Censorinus 82 BC. Denarius 82 BC Rome. Laureate head of Apollo right / L CENSOR Satyr Marsyas with wine-skin, standing left; behind him, column with statue of Victory standing left. Cr. 363/1d; nearly extremely fine
rare, handsome dark toning
The Satyr Marsyas on the reverse of this handsome coins is probably to be thought in allusion the the moneyer's nomen, Marcius. L. Marcius Censorinus was the father of the homonymous consul in 39 BC and presumably the same Censorinus attested as Legate in 70 BC - if he wasn't proscribed by Sulla in 82 BC. Numerous nobles were outlawed by him during his dictatorship - even C. Iulius Caesar had to flee from Rome.
