Der Satyr Marsyas forderte Apollo zu einem musikalischen Wettstreit auf, der für ihn mit einer desaströsen Niederlage endete. Zur Strafe hängte Apollon Marsyas an einer Fichte auf und zog dem Satyr bei lebendigem Leib die Haut ab. Aus seinem Blut entsprang der gleichnamige Fluss Marsyas.
