Legend has it that Tarpeia provided the Sabines entry to the Capitol during their besiege of Rome. In return for her betrayal she was promised what the Sabines bore on their left arms. Instead of being rewarded with jewelry, she was struck dead by their shields wich were also born on their left arms.
