Die Legio XV Apollinaris wurde um 53 v.Chr. von Caesar aufgestellt und nahm am Gallischen Krieg teil. Anschließend wurde sie an Pompeius übergeben, schloß sich jedoch bei Caesars Einmarsch in Italien im folgenden Jahr, wieder ihrem ehemaligen Feldherren an. Dieser entsandte sie nach Africa, wo sie kurze Zeit später jedoch vernichtend geschlagen und anschließend aufgelöst werden musste. Octavian reaktivierte die Legion 41 v.Chr. wieder und setzte sie zunächst gegen Sextus Pompeius und später gegen Mark Anton bei Actium ein.
